  Artist Statement

Is Fashion Art? That’s the question I ask myself and the world. Black Star is the embodiment of my life's work as an artist. A place where Fashion and Art collide and become inseparable. I want to express myself through making one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing. Clothing is my art and the way I express myself. At the end of the day, it's about how I feel when wearing a piece I created. 

My love  has brought me to a place where I can create a world to push for more black men represented within the Fashion industry. Black Star is a brand but also a motto. Throughout my art career I have explored many media. I experiment in clothing, videography, photography, modeling, jewelry, and painting, but it always comes back to a central question: What is a Black Star? 

Taking vintage garments and customizing them using sewing, crocheting , painting, and  slicing I am able to create exaggerated pieces that contain pops of color and abstract ideas in the world of fast fashion today. What happens when sleeves become too long to be functional? What are the thoughts when someone sees a custom piece with pops of bright color and an old rock shirt  attached to an otherwise normal looking sweater?  I want to prove to myself and to the world that I have what it takes to make it as a creative professional. My work shows my growth and motivation to prove to people I have what it takes. This exhibition is a showcase of all my time and effort in creating my brand. A new generation of artists, rocks stars, and creatives are emerging, and I am placing myself to become a  new Black Star.
